About the Artist
Professional artist Jean Westphal Thomas grew up in Southern California, lived in Arizona for many years and is now settled in Oregon. Making art has been a part of her life since childhood. She received a BFA in Art Education from the University of Arizona where she was awarded the Zoe Gore Scholarship for art studies. Her post graduate work in painting and archaeology was done at Arizona State University and the National University of Mexico in Mexico City. After teaching high school art and crafts for many years, she moved on to teaching adults in art centers and workshops, but mainly to concentrate on her studio painting. Through the years Jean’s paintings have evolved into bold, dramatic interpretations with vivid color, strong design and interesting texture being her focus. She shows her work in galleries in several states. Besides one-woman shows, she has had her work published and has won numerous prestigious awards in juried shows. She is represented in private and corporate collections in the United States, Canada and England.
About the Paintings
All paintings offered for sale by Jean W. Thomas are of gallery exhibition quality. The paintings are created with acrylic, alkyds or oil paint and only the finest artists materials are used. Nearly all are offered for sale unframed unless listed as ‘Framed’. Most are ‘gallery wrapped’ with the painting image continuing around the edges and may be hung unframed. (some pieces have a solid color on the edge). All supports are prepared with at least 2 coats of primer/gesso and the finished paintings are varnished and ready to hang.
Jean’s technique often involves the use of thick buttery paint and mediums including marble dust, glass beads, gels and other interesting additives which create distinctive ‘painterly’ textures on the painting surface. This texture is desireable and is a normal part of the artwork.
Every painting is signed by the artist on the front and marked with the title, date, medium and dimensions on the back. Please contact the artist regarding availability as many pieces are currently in galleries but may be acquired through the gallery. Shipping is additional to the price and will vary due to size, weight and distance. It is important to remember that no painting should be hung in direct light or outside.
